Solve the Climate Crisis? Yes We Can!
The science is clear. We can expect Climate Change to cause more frequent and powerful tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, droughts and geo-political instability, resulting in untold suffering not just for humans but for all life on our planet.
But here’s the good news. It’s not too late to take action to avert the worst impacts unchecked climate change will bring. What action? Here’s a short list:
- Talk about climate change with family and friends. Express your concerns and share stories of real human impacts. (Facts do little to motivate people to act.) Avoid doom and gloom and emphasize our capacity to create a more sustainable and livable future. Don’t our children and grandchildren deserve it?
- Make changes in your personal life to reduce your carbon footprint, especially changes that are visible to others, like using public transportation and buying an electric or hybrid vehicle, installing solar panels on your home or business, etc. Visible changes like these will stimulate discussion about climate and help inspire more engagement.
- The Climate Crisis will not be solved without significant policy changes. Tell your representatives in Washington a) to quickly phase out all subsidies for carbon-based fuel production, b) to instead invest those tax dollars in the rapid refinement of non-carbon-based energy technologies like wind and solar as well as more efficient energy storage capacity, and to stimulate green energy installations, and c) to withhold approval of all new CO2-related projects like off-shore and Arctic drilling and new infrastructure like pipelines and refineries. Tell them if they fail to take these bold actions to protect the future of our children and grandchildren, you will vote them out of office. And then, if necessary, do just that.
In the end, overcoming the stranglehold Big Oil and their financial allies have on elections and legislation will not be easy. It will take everyone who cares about the future of life on our planet to stand up and demand change. Everyone.
